PhD Program Guidelines

All research and educational activities (including group meetings, course work, and seminars) are conducted exclusively in English. Hence, effective communication using written and verbal English is a prerequisite for admission.

Thesis Research Advisor

Upon acceptance into TLL PhD Program, Junior Research Fellow (“JRF”) with a strong desire to pursue his/her thesis in a specific research area could contact the Group Leader directly to commence discussion. Upon mutual agreement with the Thesis Research Advisor, his/her thesis research can begin upon joining TLL.

Curriculum of the PhD Program

As part of TLL PhD Program, the JRF will register as a PhD candidate with National University of Singapore (“NUS”), or Nanyang Technological University (“NTU”). A Thesis Advisory Committee (“TAC”) needs to be formed upon their acceptance into the PhD Program with either NUS or NTU. During the PhD candidature in TLL, the JRF is required to complete the following TLL in-house modules:

  • Advanced Animal Development Course, BL5220
  • Advanced Molecular Genetics, BL5223
  • Cellular Mechanisms, BL5222
  • Plant and Microbial Development, BL5221

In addition to the above TLL in-house modules, the JRF must also take other compulsory modules as required by NUS or NTU. The JRF must maintain an average grade of B (minimum CAP of 3.5 and above) for all TLL and NUS or NTU modules.

The JRF must pass the PhD Written Qualifying Examination (“QE”) and complete the Oral QE within the timeline as stipulated by the respective universities. Based on his/her research work, the JRF must write up an original PhD research proposal for the thesis topic and defend it at the oral QE. The examination committee will examine the JRF’s proposal for originality, creativity as well as relevant background knowledge and preparation to carry out the proposed research.

After passing the Oral QE, the JRF will apply to NUS or NTU to be officially transferred to the PhD program.

After passing the PhD QEs, the JRF is expected to carry out research and write a thesis on his/her research. The JRF is expected to have periodical consultations with the TAC. TAC meeting will be held twice a year. The JRF will proceed with the thesis writing in accordance with NUS and NTU guidelines. Prior to submitting his/her final thesis to NUS or NTU, the JRF must publish or submit at least one first-authored publication in a recognized international scientific journal. To ensure the journal meets the required standards, the JRF must consult the TAC before submitting his/her publication.

Mentoring

TLL strives to maintain a training environment of the highest calibre and part of the institutional commitment to our JRFs is the mentoring program. Although the primary mentor is always the thesis research advisor, the JRF may wish to seek additional guidance. On such occasions, JRFs are encouraged to approach the TLL Graduate Committee for general scientific and curriculum advice. JRFs should also maintain close communication with their TAC for research advice.

TLL recognizes that some individuals may encounter problems which they cannot resolve on their own or with the assistance of their supervisors (for e.g., conflicts, personal challenges, etc.). Although the occurrence of such situations is uncommon, our JRFs can be assured that TLL is ready to offer the support, if applicable. A set of grievance procedures are clearly outlined in TLL Employee Handbook which JRFs can refer to upon joining.
